This collection contains correspondence received by English Quaker Jonah Thompson. The bulk of these are written by Friends in Pennsylvania, relating the developing conflict between the Pennsylvania government and the Delaware Indians, and expressing concern with the role Quakers should have in a military defense of the colony. Included is a detailed account of developments regarding this issue in the Pennsylvania government by James Pemberton. Other prominent Philadelphia correspondents include Samuel Fothergill, John Smith, Hannah Pemberton, Hannah Logan, and Margaret Wistar Also included is a letter from George Churchman.

George Churchman (1730-1814) was born on October 28, 1730, in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Margaret (Brown) Churchman. In 1752, Churchman married Hannah James, the daughter of Mordecai and Gaynor (Lloyd) James. The couple had ten children. Churchman was a surveyor by profession, and in 1750, he succeeded his father as clerk of Nottingham Monthly Meeting, and served as clerk for 20 years. Samuel Fothergill (1715–1772), was a Quaker minister from Yorkshire, England. He was the sixth son of John Fothergill and his wife Margaret, well-to-do Quakers of considerable means at Carr End, Wensleydale, Yorkshire. He was born in November 1715.
